Charles White depicted the lives of black Americans for over four decades. Born in Chicago, he studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and later at the Art Students League of New York. Raised in poverty and exposed to the works of other black artists and authors, he embraced using his art as commentary on social injustice. Along with portrayals of important figures in black history, he created a series of “wanted” posters, based on Civil War posters of runaway slaves. Skilled in drawing, painting, and printmaking, White left a legacy of authentic artworks capturing the spirit of a people. Twelve of his powerful works are presented in this calendar.
